Background:
Our client company
specialises in the design, development, manufacture and marketing of surgical
devices for use in advanced minimal access and outpatient surgical procedures.
This is a senior engineering role to provide key account project management of
one or more medical device development projects. You will be an experienced
mechanical engineer with good qualifications and a proven track record.
Applicants should possess excellent technical judgement, communication skills
and an enthusiastic approach to problem solving and the ability translate
bright ideas.
As well as your
Project Management and Man Management abilities, this position requires both an
analytical and a hands on approach to design of innovative surgical
instruments. Knowledge and experience in any of the following areas would be of
benefit: precision medical devices, vendor and consultant management,
regulatory requirements, small mechanisms/drives and controls, fluid systems,
electronics packaging, materials (particularly thermoplastics, technical ceramics)
and a broad understanding of production processes and manufacturing methods.
A certain
amount of travel will be necessary and the attendance of international medical
meetings and seminars will be encouraged.
This post

will have an engineering degree plus 5 years appropriate post graduate
industrial experience.
Primary
Duties:
· Understanding of the requirements for novel
electro-therapeutic devices, which build on existing products
· Planning all the activities needed to meet
the above requirements (i.e. through feasibility, development and introduction
into manufacturing)
· Identifying suitable resources and leading a
project team to meet its objectives
· Identifying technical solutions to key
problems, either in material choice, manufacturing process or practical design
· Using hand-on approach in providing
technical guidance and resolution of any outstanding problems
· Keeping to budgetary targets
· Controlling the design to ensure that the
manufacturing costs are below agreed level
· Provision of technical material for
submission to relevant Regulatory Bodies
· Liaison with product/marketing development
managers and customers
· Preparation of new project time-scales and
budgets
· Preparing regular update reports and
presentations
· Using PC based instrumentation and CAD tools
to validate solutions

Qualifications:
Enthusiastic
and self-motivated, this person needs to be technically minded and able to analyse
new problems and identify suitable solutions quickly.
Academic
qualifications are essential to ensure complex technical issues can be
understood and analysed quickly. Some appreciation of electronics will be
needed.
Similarly, practical
skills and experience are important, because a wide range of materials and
processes are involved with the manufacture of all our products. A reasonable
level of manual dexterity for working with small items is implied, along with a
knowledge of a range materials and machining technologies.
A background of
medical devices would be ideal, although aerospace, defence or other high
technology industries which are based on mechanical engineering may be
suitable.
The individual
is likely to be 30-40 years old with a good first degree and/or a postgraduate
qualification in a relevant discipline. He or she will have a sound track
record in the development of precision mechanisms or devices using exotic
materials, and this will include working in and preferably leading
multi-disciplined team to meet tight objectives.
